Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see a whale from an outrigger canoe? Are you interested in being on a racing crew?
If you think you would like to see if this sport is for you, then contact the keiki coach Derek Park. Derek and the rest of the coaching staff train the keiki team racing techniques, team work, and good sportsmanship.
The canoe club is a great opportunity for the whole family to be involved in a sport, get out in the water, and have fun together year around. Parents can watch their kids practice and afterwards go out themselves. Then, on the way home, you can share in your great experiences.
Racing season starts in May and runs for 9 weeks. The starting age for competition is 8. There is a special division for kids 8-11, and another for kids 12-18. The crews accumulate points during the racing season. All teams can compete in the Big Island championship and the teams with enough points can compete in the State championship. This year, the State championship is on Maui.
If you want to give it a try, come to Anaeho’omalu Bay at 4:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10:00 am on Saturdays.
The cost is $50 per child for the calendar year to join the racing program. Family membership is $175. Paddles are provided for keikis.
